Originally formed in 1970, The Sir John Sedley Educational Foundation that operates today upholds the founding beliefs of Sir John and aims to support the educational needs of young, local people.
The Sir John Sedley Educational Foundation is a charitable organisation based in Rutland and Leicestershire. Governed by a board of Trustees, the charity assists young people, up to the age of 25, with financial support to help with educational development.
In 1637, Sir John Sedley founded a Free Grammar School in the village of Wymondham, to help support the educational needs of the children within the parish. Upon his death, he bequeathed £400 to his wife, Elizabeth, which she invested into land to generate an income to continue to support the master of the school.
Over the years, various changes happened with Grammar School and further land was purchased. However, nearly 400 years later, the trust fund formed by Sir John Sedley’s legacy still continues and generates considerable income to support educational facilities in the village of Wymondham and its surrounding parishes.
