The Sir John Sedley Educational Foundation Grants and Bursar

OUR GRANT and BURSARY FUNDING

The Sir John Sedley Educational Foundation assists young people, up to the age of 25, with financial support to help with educational development. This includes those in formal education, apprentices, young people in employment and those who wish to undertake private study to further their careers and education.

We help both individuals and groups by providing a bursary to help with a wide range of costs, including:

  • Academic course
  • Vocational training
  • Professional development
  • Equipment, materials and technology
  • Sport
  • Travel
  • The Arts
  • Apprenticeships
  • Rural and agricultural studies
  • General costs of living whilst in education
  • Music (When the bursary is associated with music, it is known as The Andy Chapman Music Award.)

Bursary Awards are also available, which provide funding for up to 3 years for a course or project of special merit.

Each qualifying individual is entitled to apply once per Financial Year.

Our funding is at the discretion of the Trustees, but typical amounts available are as follows:

  • General Bursary (generally used for costs of living during studies or a range of costs associated with the same project): Up to £3,000 per annum;
  • Technology Grant (generally used for laptops and devices): £500;
  • Grants (general): No limit.

FAQ

Q. I’ve been at university for 2 years, can I apply?

A. Yes. It doesn’t matter what stage you are at with your education. As long as you are the age of 25 or under, you are eligible to apply for a grant or bursary.

Q. I want to take sabbatical leave to travel and broaden my knowledge. Does this qualify?

A. As long as you are travelling for educational purposes (i.e. not a holiday) your travel qualifies to be subsidised through a grant.

Q. I used to live in one of the mentioned parishes, but now live in student halls. Do I qualify for a grant or bursary?

A. Possibly. As long as your main residence is still within the qualifying villages and parishes, your application will be considered.

Q. I am 18 and have left education. Can I apply for a grant or bursary?

A. Yes if the application is for something that will further your education, such as an apprenticeship, or help with your personal development in the workplace.

Grant AID AND BURSARY GUIDELINES

At the Sir John Sedley Educational Foundation, we aim to help support young people with financial support in variety of different areas of their education. This could be with materials, contributions towards vocational courses, educational trips, or just general expenses that education can entail.

We judge each application on an individual basis, but if you are unsure if your needs qualify for funding, please do not hesitate in contacting us.

With Grants and Bursaries, the amounts awarded are at the Trustees' discretion. Please note that individuals can apply each academic year.

With Bursaries, there is generally no maximum amount, but this will typically be £3,000 for each Financial Year of your course or study programme.

For any applications that involve technology, for example to help purchase a laptop, we have a Technology Policy which is as follows:

  • The Trust will help qualifying young people purchase technology and associated equipment, for example laptops.
  • The Trust will pay up to £500.00 per applicant.
  • Only individuals can apply. If an institution, such as a school, requires equipment for their students, the amount awarded will be considered outside of the these rules, and a blanket grant will be considered to help.

As part of the terms of each Grant or Bursary, the Trustees ask that an update on your progress and achievements is provided, along with quotes, invoices or receipts. Further detail will be given about this if your application is approved.

In the instance where funding is approved before your course or event is cancelled, you will be obligated to return the funds to the Trust.

If the monies are not used as originally intended, you are required to notify clerk@sirjohnsedley.org.uk immediately. If it is deemed that the funds are not being used appropriately, they can be recouped and future applications may be refused.
